Supreme Court seeks government’s reply on conversion of public transport vehicles to EV

According to the 2012 electric vehicle policy, the public transport vehicles operated by all government departments will be gradually converted into electric vehicles in a phased manner.

New Delhi: Supreme Court of India on Friday has asked Ministry of Road Transport to convert more of the public transport vehicles into the cleaner electric vehicles.

A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde issued a notice to the central government and asked it to file a reply within four weeks. Also, the apex court of the country has announced that it will form a panel to suggest measures on alternate fuels including electric vehicles for public transport as part of the mass mobility.

According to the 2012 electric vehicle policy, the public transport vehicles operated by all government departments are supposed to be gradually converted into electric vehicles in a phased manner. Also, it mandated charging stations in all public buildings is being addressed.

While hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), the Supreme Court has sought the government’s response on the steps being taken for that. The apex court has asked the transport department to consider the cleaner mode of transport in the public space in view of rising pollution and other climatic issues.
