The Swedish renewable energy company Svevind has signed an agreement with the government of Kazakhstan to develop and build a 20 GW green hydrogen plant in the Mangystau province of southwestern Kazakhstan. A final investment decision is expected to be made by 2026 and the project is expected to start producing green hydrogen by 2030, before reaching its full capacity in 2032.
The electrolysers will be able to produce up to 2 Mt/year of green hydrogen starting from 2032, equivalent to one-fifth of the 10 Mt/year EU target for imported green hydrogen in 2030. The electrolysers will be powered by several wind and solar PV plants, which will reach a total capacity of around 40 GW and will be installed in the flat grasslands of Kazakhstan.
The US$50bn Hyrasia One project would help Europe reduce its dependance on fossil fuels.
