MUMBAI: After experimenting with first-of-its- kind substation that was set up on 44th floor of a highrise in Lower Parel in 2018, Tata Power on Thursday announced plans to scale this initiative of high-floor substation and multi-floor metering to four to five locations in Mumbai soon.

A senior Tata official told TOI that the areas with highrises where such substations will come up are in Worli in the island city and at Borivli, Andheri, Dahisar and Malad in the suburbs.

“The next one will be on the 25th floor of a building,” an official said, adding that at a time when Mumbai was growing vertically and there was scarcity of space, this seemed to be a feasible solution.

The project will be carried out with multi floor metering with mini feeder pillars on every fifth floor of the building. Besides, there will be consumer metering on individual floors, the official said.

“This unique design of multi-floor metering has benefits of reduction in electricity losses, space optimisation and optimum voltage profile at the consumer end,” the official added.

Tata Power president (T&D) Sanjay Banga said that the power utility will venture into “customising and optimising” substations to meet the needs of consumers. “We will design more such unique substations for highrises and ensure reliable power supply to some of the tallest buildings in the city,” he added.

The substation on the 44th floor of a Lower Parel highrise was installed at a cost of Rs 2 crore. It has a capacity of 5 MVA, and the entire operation was carried out by a team of 40 officials, including six senior engineers in 2018, with the power supply actually starting in 2019.
