BENGALURU: About 618 MW of utility scale solar tenders and 225 MW of wind-solar hybrid tenders were issued in the month of June despite the Covid-19 outbreak, according to consultancy firm JMK Research and Analytics.
Tender activity is expected to continue in July as well. After a long hiatus, a 2000 MW wind tender is expected to be issued this month by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the renewable energy ministry’s nodal agency responsible for conducting auctions.
“With the current constraints on capital and the liquidity crunch developers are under, bidding will not be smooth. But interest will certainly be there,” said Supreeth Srinivasa Rao, Associate Director, Industrial Practice, Frost & Sullivan.
Bid submission for SECI’s 1200MW wind solar hybrid tender is also expected to take place this month, JMK’s monthly report said. ET had reported that the ministry of new and renewable energy is likely to gradually move away from plain vanilla solar and wind tenders. “It’s a good idea, it has been a long time in the making. But the storage component has to be there in order to make a real impact. Hybrid tenders are going to be the future,” Rao said.
Solar tariffs fell to a record low of Rs 2.36 per unit in an auction conducted by SECI last week, for 2000MW of capacity. “There was a 5 per cent fall in module prices in June compared to the previous month,” the report said.
288MW of new solar capacity and 62MW of new wind capacity was installed in May, it said.
