In recent weeks, Tesla has accelerated the pace for the second-stage building of its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, which is meant for the production of the Model 3, according to electrek.

In the past one month, Tesla has been carrying out the construction works around the main building of the factory; the construction work is believed to be related to its second-stage project.

The belief is upheld by a report from Reuters last week, which points out that the building of the Shanghai factory has entered a new stage. Tesla’s sources have noted that the facilities under construction include a number of battery production lines. The engineering works, which reportedly include a machine workshop and an energy center, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2019.

According to a report by the Global Times, the engineering works for the second stage project could be a lot faster than that of the first stage.

Another telltale sign for Tesla’s new project is the registration of a wholly-owned construction company with a registered capital of US$1 million by Tesla in China the other day.

It is not clear whether the projected factory will produce batteries or battery sets. Tesla has recently signed a purchasing agreement with LG, which will officially supply its NCM 811 batteries for the Model 3 cars made in China from its factory in Nanjing, according to a recent report.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, pointed out earlier that the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai will produce car batteries and complete cars. Its monthly output is currently expected to hit 40,000 cars by the end of this year. The models that will be produced include the Model 3 and Model Y.

With its integrated functions of R&D, manufacturing, and sales, the Shanghai factory in China will be completed within two to three years and its annual capacity will hit 500,000 cars following completion of the second-stage construction work, which is double the level of first stage.
