Shree Nakoda Karna Badhir Vidyalaya situated in Bhiwandi, Thane managed to cut its electricity bill down from Rs 40,000 to just the basic charge after installing a rooftop solar system.
Bhiwandi: Shree Nakoda Karna Badhir Vidyalaya, a school in Thane district brought its electricity bill down from Rs 40,000 per month to literally zero by installing a rooftop solar system. The electricity consumption across the three-acre school campus, situated near Saravali village in Bhiwandi is powered by 30-kilowatt power solar panels, making the school consume zero energy.Fans, lights and computer at the school are all supplied power via renewable solar energy. The school is run by Shree Bhairav Seva Samiti, Bhiwandi and is home to 202 students with hearing and speech impairment across 20 classrooms, who are taught there free of charge.Surendra Jain Gogad, a trustee told Hindustan Times that the installation of the system was funded by two private companies that helped them and their students in understanding the importance of adoption of green energy. He further added that other than being cost-effective, the system can also help mitigate carbon emissions.
The system produces between 90 to 120 units depending on the amount of sunlight received by it. As per the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, 923 tons of Carbon dioxide is mitigated by a 30 kWp system through its lifetime which is just as environment-friendly as planting 1,476 teak trees.School Chairman Pushpat Jain reportedly said that there was a sudden drop in their electricity bill within a month and it became zero within two months. They were only paying the basic charges to electricity distributor. That surprised their students so much so that they started to convince their own parents for the adoption of different renewable energy forms. He added that a lot of parents had been enquiring about such measures from the school administration since then.
The system was installed in April while inaugurated in July this year. The cost of the solar plant came out to be around Rs 16.5 lakh approximately, which the school would attempt to recover over a period of coming three years.
