Turkey awards pre-licences for 744 MW of renewables storage – EQ Mag
Turkey has awarded 12 pre-licences for the installation of renewables-based energy storage projects with a total capacity of 744 MW, Mustafa Yilmaz, the head of the country’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA), told Anadolu Agency on Saturday.
According to Yilmaz, a total of 4,369 applications for such projects have been submitted to date, corresponding to a total capacity of about 221 GW. This includes some 113.5 GW for facilities that will store wind and 107.5 GW to store solar power.
EMRA’s head has noted that the newly-awarded pre-licences are expected to result in a total investment of USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.36bn).
In November 2022, new regulations were published in the Official Gazette to enable energy storage developers to obtain preliminary licences to also install matching wind or solar power generation capacity. Speaking at the Turkish Wind Energy Congress a few days earlier, Yilmaz said he expected this measure to attract an investment of up to USD 25 billion.
At present, Turkey’s installed renewables capacity includes almost 11.5 GW of wind and about 9.8 GW of solar.
