In Detail : In a major push for green energy adoption, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious target of installing 8 lakh solar rooftop systems across the state by March 2027, under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. The initiative is part of the broader national goal set by the Government of India, which aims to install one crore rooftop solar units during the same period.
For the current financial year (2025–26), the Uttar Pradesh government has committed to 2.65 lakh installations, with a monthly target of 22,000 units—translating to approximately 300 installations per district. The campaign has gained considerable momentum, with over 1 lakh installations already completed and an average of 11,000 being added each month, or more than 500 per day.
To ensure effective execution, districts, DISCOMs, municipal corporations, and municipalities have all been assigned specific targets. The scheme’s progress is being monitored in real-time through integration with the Chief Minister’s Dashboard, ensuring transparency and accountability at every level.
The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) is leading the state-wide rollout, aimed at making solar energy more accessible and affordable for the masses. The government has received 10.73 lakh applications via the official portal as of March 2025, and the vendor listing process is currently underway.
As of April 2025, more than 2,500 vendors had been empanelled, with 1,800 receiving formal training to aid the scheme’s implementation. These vendors are being financially empowered through access to loans and credit guarantee schemes, facilitated by banks. Training programmes are being conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development, the Ministry of Skill Development, and UPNEDA.
Launched in February 2024, the rooftop solar scheme has become a flagship initiative of the Yogi government’s green energy agenda. By expanding the reach of renewable energy, Uttar Pradesh is emerging as a national leader in solar energy adoption, supporting both environmental sustainability and energy self-reliance for millions of households.
