Upcoming Electric Cars – Mahindra & Tata Motors
India is ready to embrace the electric vehicles, as most of the automakers are readying their EVs for our market. Home-grown passenger vehicle manufacturers are also planning to introduce multiple new electric vehicles in the next couple of years.
It is expected that EVs will account for close to 20-30% of total passenger vehicle sales in India by 2030. In this article, we talk about the upcoming electric vehicles from the home-grown automakers – Mahindra & Mahindra, and Tata Motors.
TATA ALTROZ EV
Tata Motors had showcased the electric version of the Altroz premium hatchback at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is reported that the Altroz EV could be launched by the end of 2021 or early 2022. The electric hatch is expected to be equipped with the same powertrain that does duty in the Nexon EV. The Nexon EV features an IP67 certified 30.2kWh battery pack with a permanent magnet AC motor.
The Altroz EV’s battery pack is expected to offer an electric range between 250km and 300km. The battery will be charged using DC fast charging as well as regular power socket. It might take around 60 mins to get charged up to 80% using DC fast charging. The EV is also likely to get new ZConnect app for connected car features.
TATA HBX EV
Tata Motors will introduce the HBX micro SUV before the end of this year. The micro SUV will be offered in petrol avatar only; however, Tata is also working on the electric version of the small SUV.
The electric model is expected to be introduced in 2022-23. The mini SUV is likely to feature the Ziptron EV powertrain technology that also offered in the NEXON EV.
The Ziptron EV powertrain comprises of a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack offering a 129bhp, electric motor mounted on the front axle. The NEXON EV claims to offer a range of 312km on a single charge.
The HBX micro SUV is expected to feature an updated version of the electric powertrain with range of over 300km.
MAHINDRA EXUV300
Mahindra had showcased the electric version of the XUV300 compact SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo. The eXUV300 electric SUV is reportedly to be launched by 2022.
The Mahindra eXUV300 will directly rival the country’s best-selling Tata Nexon EV. Previous reports claim that the XUV300 electric will have a range of 375km on single charge.
It will be offered in two variants with standard variant offering a range of around 200km. The long range variant will have a range of 375km, which is significantly higher than the Tata Nexon EV (Claimed 312km on a single charge).
Based on the MESMA 350 (Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture 350) platform, the eXUV300 will get an in-house developed 350-volt powertrain that supports a wide range of electric motors ranging from 60 kW to 280 kW output, dual motor setups and batteries up to 80 kWh capacities.
MAHINDRA EKUV100
The Mahindra eKUV100 micro SUV will be launched by the end of 2021 or early 2022. It will be positioned against the upcoming Tata HBX EV. The Mahindra eKUV100 is expected to be the most affordable electric SUV in the country.
It will be powered by a 40kW electric motor that produces 53bhp of power and 120Nm of torque.
The mini SUV has a 15.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will offer a range of 120km on a full charge. Mahindra will offer the vehicle with both standard and fast-charging options.
