New York governor Kathy Hochul last week announced that Vermont has joined six other states in a bid to compete for federal funding to establish the Northeast Clean Hydrogen Hub.

Under an USD-8-billion (EUR 7.5bn) hydrogen hub programme funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the US is looking to set up to 10 regional clean hydrogen hubs.

The Northeast Clean Hydrogen Hub that now includes the states of New York, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont, as well as more than 100 clean hydrogen ecosystem partners, is progressing to develop and submit a full proposal to the US Department of Energy (DoE) for the hydrogen hub funding. The department issued an initial Clean Hydrogen Hubs Funding Opportunity Announcement in September 2022. Concept papers were due in November. The Northeast Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub received a determination that it should move forward with a full proposal on December 27, with the deadline for submissions being April 7, 2023. Projects may receive up to USD 1.25 billion.

Since an update in August, the New York-led coalition has added a number of partners from the industry, academia and non-profit sectors, including names such as AES, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind, Mitsubishi Power Americas Inc and NextEra Energy Resources.

The partners will continue to focus on the integration of renewables, such as onshore and offshore wind, hydropower and solar, and of nuclear power into clean hydrogen production, and the assessment of clean hydrogen for use in transportation, heavy industry and power generation.
