Watch: Drone footage shows world’s largest off-shore wind farm, operating in the Irish Sea
Lying off the coast of England, it can produce enough clean energy to power 600,000 homes.
With 87 turbines generating enough electricity to power nearly 600,000 homes, the world’s largest offshore wind farm officially went into service off the coast of northwestern England on Thursday.
What’s spectacular, though, is that the wind turbines don’t stand on land, but in the sea, making for an altogether surreal sight.
The turbines are a part of the new Walney Extension, a project led by Danish energy company Orsted. Drone and time lapse footage posted by the company (video above) showed the 145-square kilometer expanse in the Irish Sea, 19 kilometers off the Cumbrian coast.
According to NPR, the turbines stand 640 feet above mean sea level and have the capacity to produce 659 megawatts of energy in a clean and renewable way.
