New Delhi: Wind energy sector can generate employment for four million people globally by 2030 provided its deployment takes place at the necessary rate, according to Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

“Wind energy has been a major creator of skilled jobs and community benefits. Direct and indirect jobs in wind energy sector will more than triple from 1.2 million in 2018 to nearly 4 million globally by 2030,” the global industry body said in a statement.

It added wind power is a key building block for economic recovery from the impact of COVID-19, which will enable governments across the globe to renew critical infrastructure for a sustainable future.

From 2015 to 2019 alone, the wind energy sector generated over $652 billion investments. According to GWEC, ramping up installed wind capacity to above 2,000 gigawatt (GW) by 2030 would create an additional annual investment of $207 billion.

The wind industry will help to deliver the jobs, clean and affordable power and energy security needed for a sustainable economic recovery, it said. As oil prices continue to drop, GWEC has asked governments across the world to introduce meaningful carbon pricing mechanisms to fund the energy transition.
